Overview

The improvement and regeneration of Aberdeen City Centre is a priority for Aberdeen City Council and for the wider Region.

The aspiration is to create a city centre worthy of the city’s status as a World Energy Hub. The masterplan’s vision is to create a city centre for a global city by energising the city centre to deliver prosperity and better quality of life for all. The masterplan is set with 49 projects and seven intervention areas.

The Council approved the masterplan and delivery programme in June 2015 and has set aside £20m to establish a City Centre infrastructure fund to kick start investment and provide a springboard to move forward.

The Aberdeen City Centre programme will provide investment opportunities across a range of uses within the context of an integrated plan that will be attractive to investors looking to play a part in the future development of Aberdeen.

A key project within the Masterplan for the City Centre, and identified as one of the seven Intervention Areas, is the creation of a new urban quarter, Queen’s Square, adjacent to the very heart of the City Centre. The opportunity is for a residential led development, with additional Arts/Cultural, civic and supporting retail, business and leisure opportunities. The Masterplan identifies that the scheme could accommodate some 7,700m2 of ground floor retail, leisure, financial, professional and other service uses, along with upper floor residential uses of up to 25,700m2.

The site is appropriate for a high quality residential scheme, offering all the benefits of city centre living – within a very short walking distance of other city centre amenities, including new hotel, office and leisure / retail space at Marischal Square, the £30m refurbished Art Gallery (open 2017), and the £7m refurbished Music Hall (open 2018). The area is close to the cities iconic Marischal College and the main city centre retail pitch which incorporates revitalised areas of public realm pedestrian friendly spaces, suitable for a wide range of public events.
